For as long as I can remember, I've loved working with fabrics, textures and design. What began as a curiosity about how things were made has grown into a passion for creating pieces that are both beautiful and personal.

For years, that creativity has taken many forms. From reupholstering much-loved furniture and making bespoke soft furnishings to designing and sewing garments, I've always found joy in bringing ideas to life with my own hands. Every project tells a story, and I believe the smallest details—a carefully chosen fabric, a neat line of stitching, or the perfect finishing touch—can completely transform a piece.

Creating this website has been something I've wanted to do for a long time. Social media has been a wonderful place to share snippets of my work, but I've often wished for somewhere that could tell the bigger story. A place where projects don't disappear down a feed after a few days, where I can share inspiration, document creative journeys, and collect everything that makes Michelle Powell Designs what it is.

This is that place.

What you'll find here

Behind the Seams is exactly what the name suggests. It's where I'll be sharing the stories behind my work—not just the finished pieces, but everything that happens along the way.

You'll find upholstery projects from start to finish, dressmaking adventures, soft furnishing ideas, favourite fabrics and suppliers, creative inspiration, lessons I've learned (including the occasional mistake!), and the people, places and experiences that inspire me.

One of those unexpected creative adventures has been Fashion Floof.

What started as making matching accessories for my own dog, Bailey, soon became something much bigger. Designing bow ties, bandanas and ruffles has introduced me to a wonderful community of fellow dog lovers, and one of my favourite projects so far has been creating a Breakfast at Tiffany's collection of dog ruffles to help raise money for charity. It reminded me that creativity often takes you somewhere you never expected to go, and I can't wait to share more of that journey with you in future posts.

Above all, I hope this blog becomes a place where creativity feels approachable and inspiring. Whether you're here because you love sewing, upholstery, handmade design, dogs in stylish accessories, or you're simply curious about the process behind creating something from scratch, I hope you'll find something that makes you smile.
